Lifelong learning for Residents at The Vineyards Residence
Grade 3 / 4 students from local Glenmore Elementary School are thinking outside the box and taking their learning into the community by joining residents at The Vineyards Residence in Kelowna, BC. Each week the children walk over to The Vineyards and spend an hour teaching and facilitating a craft or activity with the residents. The students bring all the necessary supplies in their backpacks and, upon arrival, actively listen to their teacher’s instructions, which are relayed in French to these bilingual students. Once clear on their activity, students lead residents, in English or French (if desired), as they create different crafts. Most recently, the students and seniors made lanterns to celebrate Chinese New Year.
The students enjoy their opportunities to lead while also learning from their elders. The seniors look forward to interacting with the students and doing something special. Whether it’s reading or crafting or board games, the partnership is beneficial to all in attendance and the joy in the room is contagious. Merci beaucoup les étudiants!
