The benefits of respite care in an Etobicoke retirement home

The obvious advantage is that you get a break from caregiving. Beyond that, though, senior care homes offer the following:

1. The enriched setting offers peace of mind. Retirement homes listed above offer excellent care, accommodations, amenities, and activities for seniors. They also have care workers, perhaps nurses, health services, and a doctor on call. No matter what, the care available is superior to many other options. Put your loved one in good hands.

2. Learn professional caregiving techniques. If your loved one has dementia like Alzheimer’s Disease, you’ll see how professional care workers deal with the negative responsive behaviours associated with this. Special training for staff includes techniques in gentle persuasion or virtual dementia training, both teaching specific tactics in professional care.

3. See retirement homes’ care and community in action. If your loved one has a degenerative disease, you can consider this a trial stay. See the benefits of having meals prepared daily. Check out the amenities. Join in activities if possible. It can help open eyes for you and your loved one.

On respite care in Ontario and associated costs

Home and Community Support Services in Etobicoke (HCSS) works with various government services including long-term care providers. They offer recommendations about care. In Ontario, you can procure respite care for 60 days in a row and 90 days in any calendar year. Funding works similarly to long-term care. Care costs are covered by the province while families are responsible for room and board. Conditions apply, although one reason for this can be simply wanting a vacation. Fees for this kind of stay in an Etobicoke retirement home start at approximately $100 a day, while a community with superior amenities starts from $175 per day. Communities linked above can tell you more.

Adult day programs start at about $25 per hour. Professional programs like those listed on the linked page don’t have waiting lists. Government programs may be free but will often require you to put your name on a waiting list.

Home care in Toronto can also provide respite care, starting at around $45 an hour.

Other short stays vs. respite stays

Other types of retirement homes’ short stays can be a respite for caregivers.

Retirement home trial stays are ideally a two-week stay that gives families a break, doubling as a tryout of senior living. Seniors and families have their eyes opened to the remarkable world of 21st-century senior living. These are not your great-grandma’s nursing homes!

convalescent care stay is a good idea for those recovering from surgery. It's an excellent recovery environment, with medical staff and care support on hand, with lots of company.
