The advantages of a respite stay in a retirement home

A temporary stay in a retirement home offers some distinct advantages including the following:

Advantages of home care and day programs

Home care service providers in Toronto offer respite care with a number of important advantages you simply can't find through other means.

These advantages include:

The Ontario Home Care Association cautions against hiring non-accredited help. Well over half of Ontario families polled are unaware of the dangers of hiring non-professional help; people have hired help based on a too-easy job interview and a few references. Proper caregiving is very difficult and challenging, even dangerous. In many cases, untrained, unqualified people (including family members) are simply not prepared for the difficulties and frustrations of caregiving. In the worst cases, this can lead to unfortunate effects that can include abuse (verbal, even physical). You are well-advised to get professional help instead, and you'll never regret spending a bit of extra money to get respite from professional caregivers.

The benefits of respite care for caregiving families

Family members often "spell each other off" in a caregiving scenario. However, when you get professional respite care, you get professional help.

There are a number of advantages to this:

Respite care is offered as a service of the Ontario Ministry of Health, and is available by contacting your Home and Community Care Support Services (HCCSS). Your needs will be assessed by an HCCSS representative, and all your options will be fully explained. The HCCSS defines this type of stay separately from convalescent care, a service also offered by some residences. Learn more about convalescent care in Toronto.

Respite care can be a much-needed break for caregivers, a time to re-connect with friends and family in a relaxed way. You can also use briefer respite care time to shop, work out or run errands when needed, or just take some time for yourself to do some things you like to do. This is a perfectly reasonable way for you to refresh your strength and energy.

Any expert in this area will counsel you that it is, in fact, smart to take a break so that you can be a better caregiver later, and your loved one can benefit from the best of all possible worlds – availing themselves of tactical professional care when needed while getting loving care from members of their own family. When you "broaden your team" of caregivers, you can learn more from each other and get professional advice from people gaining experience directly with your ailing loved one.

Many others have gone before you, too. Read more about how others have dealt with fatigue, learned lessons and can offer advice to help you deal with caregiving stress.

An overview of respite care costs

Residential respite care in the communities above costs $150 to $400 per day depending on the communities’ amenities and base costs.

Adult day programs offer structured activities and supervision, costing up to $200 per day (or perhaps more). Learn more about adult day programs near you

In-home respite care, offered by Toronto home care companies, entails care workers coming into the home. Care starts at around $45 an hour. Consult with the companies listed above.

More about short stays in a Toronto retirement home

People often (mistakenly) use respite care synonymously with other types of short stays. These closely related options are worth understanding though:

Convalescent stays in a retirement home are ideal for people 50 and older recovering from surgery (e.g. hip replacement.) You’re surrounded by care staff that includes medical staff in some retirement homes. Again, you get a window into the community’s life. You’ll like being surrounded by people your age and be impressed with the lifestyle in a retirement home.

Trial stays are (as the name suggests) a tryout of the retirement home. It’s a low-commitment way of getting an inside perspective on a community that intrigues you. A respite care stay can be seen as a trial stay for some people. You get a complete idea of the care available in the community and see all the benefits of prepared meals, housekeeping, and the amenities and activities that are the lifeblood of the community.

Guest stays are short stays for family members or others. If someone is visiting from out of town, retirement homes can rent them a suite. This makes it seamless to visit with their parent or loved one and they get a full taste of what their daily life is like. It’s like staying in a luxury hotel.
