Four benefits of respite care in a North York retirement home

1. Take a break from caregiving. This is obviously the primary benefit. Give yourself a break and you’ll be a better carer in the long run.

2. Learn from professionals. Quite often people who seek respite care are caring for a loved one with dementia. When you procure the services of a retirement home or long-term care, you get to see professional caregivers in action. When it comes to Alzheimer’s and dementia there’s training that helps staff understand and deal with some negative behaviours related.

3. A clinical setting offers peace of mind. Retirement homes may have doctors on call, and will almost always have nurses on duty if they offer respite care. There’s medical equipment and other health services, possibly right in the same building. Learn more from communities listed above.

4. You get a look inside at what retirement homes offer. See for yourself the benefits of having meals prepared daily. Take in the amenities. Join activities if you can. You’ll see senior living in action, and you’ll have your eyes opened to the possibilities.

On respite care in North York and associated costs

Home and Community Support Services in North York (HCSS) will recommend care and where to get it. They work with long-term care and various community services, providing access to those care providers.  In Ontario, you can stay up to 60 days in a row somewhere and you can use 90  calendar days in a given year.

Funding works similarly to long-term care. You pay for the room. Care costs are covered by the province. There are conditions for respite care, of course. If you don’t qualify, consider procuring your own respite care stay.

Costs of a respite care stay in an North York retirement home are approximately $100 a day at a minimum. Some communities may charge more if they have a lot of amenities. Learn more by consulting the reports linked above or reaching out to communities from our platform.

Costs for professional adult day programs, start at about $25 an hour. Professional programs like those on our site don’t have waiting lists (as you’ll often find with government-run day programs.)

Costs for home care start at around $45 an hour.

Respite stays vs. other short stays

Retirement homes offer a variety of short stays that can be a de facto respite.

Trial stays are usually one- or two-week stays that give families a break. Of course, the main purpose is to give seniors (and families) a firsthand look at life inside a retirement home.

Convalescent care stays are ideal for recovering from surgery or after any other hospital stay. Anyone 65 and older might be surprised at how ideal a retirement home is—and how much they enjoy being pampered, in the company of fellow seniors.

Guest stays are ideal for family members from out of town visiting senior loved ones in a retirement home.
