The Sumach by Chartwell is a spectacular, still-very-new retirement destination close to the heart of Toronto. It’s an ideal place for people who love to be where the fun and excitement is. That can be found both inside the community—really all you need—and in the nearby area, where there’s all the best that Toronto has to offer.
This building in the heart of Toronto is optimal for seniors who want to enjoy the finest senior living in a friendly, happy community. Since New Horizons is a charitable organization, costs are reasonable in spite of its premium location, the beautiful building, and the exemplary care given. Built over 40 years ago, it has undergone several recent renewals and improvements. It's the best of all possible worlds, combining rich experience in senior living and care with contemporary accessibility design and building amenities, in the heart of this world-class city.
I’m so pleased to give 5 stars to Chartwell at Sumach and Dundas. This team at Chartwell at Sumach has been a incredible and talented team. I had a friend (Shelly Battram) that move to Chartwell almost a year ago, and the service and support that my friend got there was amazing and outstanding, even they give me lot of support and help to deal with my dearest friend (Shelly Battram). I call this team my home and family. And the decor is so beautiful and this place is so clean all the time.
The most wonderful place. Beautiful new, clean building with purpose built units; good food, good activities and most of all an amazing staff that goes above and beyond. After looking into so many retirement homes, my family and I are so thrilled that we were able to get my mom a place here. Couldn't be happier.
I was looking for a residence for my Father 88 years old. Sumach was an ideal for my father. We spoke with Mike Tisiot at Sumach who was awesome, professional and caring. The entire process of meeting with us via video (we live in the USA) and then meeting with us in-person and responding to my numerous emails in detail and swiftly is commendable. As one knows moving an elderly father from his house to a new residence is stressful for the entire family and Mike made the process very smooth for us and is always available to answer any questions and work with our schedule when needed. I highly recommend Sumach and in particular Mike Tisiot.
I recently moved both of my parents into The Sumach by Chartwell. They love their new retirement residence and all of the activities that they offer. Grant Hooper was the main person who has guided and assisted through the process. He is very kind, compassionate, is always very attentive and responds promptly. We can always rely on him to answer or questions or direct us to the appropriate person. I highly recommend contacting Grant if you are looking for a retirement residence for yourself or for loved ones.
My husband I have lived at the Sumach from the day it opened its doors on the 1st of April 2019. We love our home, the pleasant and ever-considerate staff and the friendly and helpful residents. This is "Home". We would like to end our days here, health and finances permitting. This is a very safe and secure environment; one that gives you all the freedom you need while knowing that help is always there if and when you need it. Thank you to the wonderful staff at the Sumach.
My mom was loved and well cared for there. Thanks again to Robin and all the staff at NHT. You were HOME to my mom for the past two years.
Our mother moved in a couple of years ago... New Horizons has turned out to be an amazing place for our mom. She's on the 3rd floor for "memory residents" where she gets friendly and attentive care. The staff are absolutely amazing! They have our mother dressed nicely and always looking her best. They engage her in her favourite game (Scrabble) which she still wins regularly! New Horizons is super-clean, well-organized, and always cheerful. We're very lucky our mother is so happy there.
We moved here from Sault Ste. Marie and we're glad we did. Everything is designed and built and planned for seniors, so that they have just a splendid time here. They have a wellness centre, and with my nursing background, that impressed me. It includes a doctor and a nurse practitioner, with nurses on staff. If you ever have an emergency, you can get help. There's also a closeness to many facilities required by older people. Without even using a bus, we've got banking, a tremendous library just down the street and other things that are just great to have. It's become our home.
We are so glad that our mother had the good fortune to live at New Horizons Tower for 8 years. The care she received was kind, compassionate and attentive throughout the time that she lived there, which included the pandemic. Everyone was exemplary and fulfilled their responsibilities with care and thoughtfulness. It was a true home for our mother and a blessing for which we are all grateful. I highly recommend this retirement residence without hesitation.
My father has been living there for almost 4 years ... and we could not be happier with the caring and supportive staff and administrators, the great programs and activities they offer and the wonderful homemade food they serve!

One of the most valued aspects of life at The Sumach is our location in the newly revitalized and redeveloped Regent Park neighbourhood. The recent revitalization of the area has restored a diversity of architecture that matches surrounding neighbourhoods and reconnected Regent Park to Toronto’s grid of streets. It also included the creation of new commercial spaces and community facilities that have provided a venue for the neighbourhood’s thriving arts and culture scene. As such, we benefit from being in the midst of a dynamic urban environment where everything—including shopping, dining, culture, recreation and transportation—is only steps away.
New Horizons Tower is ideally located in Bloordale Village. Steps from the Dufferin subway, and directly linked to Dovercourt Baptist Church, New Horizons Tower is located at 1140 Bloor Street West, Located one block south of NHT is the Dufferin Mall, with over 140 shops and services.
