Our Perspective

How we see New Horizons Tower

This building in the heart of Toronto is optimal for seniors who want to enjoy the finest senior living in a friendly, happy community. Since New Horizons is a charitable organization, costs are reasonable in spite of its premium location, the beautiful building, and the exemplary care given. Built over 40 years ago, it has undergone several recent renewals and improvements. It's the best of all possible worlds, combining rich experience in senior living and care with contemporary accessibility design and building amenities, in the heart of this world-class city.

Care ranges from independent and assisted living to memory care. Extra care services onsite include a visiting physiotherapist and chiropodist.

The residence features gorgeously well-appointed suites, especially in the newly renovated Oasis. Suites are designed with the latest in accessibility features, including ample space throughout, walk-in showers and other features. They range from studio size to 2 bedroom apartments. On top of all of that, there's a beauty salon and cafe and other amenities right in the building, while you can walk outside to find the full wealth of downtown Toronto conveniences. It creates a right-sized world for seniors, giving them all they need and much more.

Community’s Perspective

How New Horizons Tower sees itself

Who are you as a community?

Celebrating it's 50 year legacy as one of the City's leading not-for-profit senior housing providers, inspired by a foundation of love, hope and faith, New Horizons Tower is committed to enhancing and enriching the lives of seniors who choose to live in the heart of Bloordale Village. Ideally located steps from the Dufferin Subway, Dufferin Grove Park and Dufferin Mall. From delicious dining to well-designed suites and lounges, residents are enjoying life at NHT!

  • Opened in: 1974
  • Ownership: Non-profit.
  • Languages Spoken: English

What do you do differently or uniquely well?

As a Not For Profit, New Horizons Tower is uniquely situated to recommit and reinvest all resources back into the community - offering enhanced dining, a spotless community, additional activities programming, high staffing levels, and continue to improve with renovations and upgrades.

Residents (and their guests!) look forward to meals and special dinners at NHT, though many choose the location for the easy access and walkability of Bloordale Village. Walk-out to shopping on Bloor, and steps from the TTC, Dufferin Mall, Bloor Gladstone Library and Dufferin Grove park!

What supports do you offer residents as they adjust to life there?

Many residents touring and moving to NHT are living independently; driving, travelling, shopping and cooking. No matter how independent you are, we recognize that any move is a big deal! Our Marketing Manager is here to guide you through the touring, application and moving process and can recommend additional resources.

Once you've arrived there are orientation goals and introductions to the features of your suite, community and other residents. We try to anticipate new resident-concerns but help is an open door or phone-call away!

But what we most often hear after someone moves is how warm and welcoming their neighbours are! Residents even formed their own committee with the goal of welcoming and orienting new residents to NHT.

How are residents supported if their needs change?

New Horizons Tower has not responded to this question yet.

Under what conditions would you advise someone against choosing your community?

New Horizons Tower has not responded to this question yet.

What might residents find surprising about your community?

Residents choose NHT for straight forward reasons. Location, inherent advantage of a not-for-profit, an active-living community; and proactively for additional services and a continuum of care. They may have already tried a lunch or dinner and look forward to the dining experience.

They expect a clean building, quality dining, fitness, concerts&lectures, perhaps a choir, gaming or gardening group, and access to additional staff and wellness resources.

What surprises new residents is not the community's building and services, but the community of residents and staff. New friendships, belonging, and home.

The community that has developed at 1140 Bloor Street West is active, diverse, tolerant and vibrant, and above all, welcoming.

How will your community change in the next five years?

New Horizons Tower has not responded to this question yet.

What five facts about your community should people know?

● Location - Heart of Bloordale Village, TTC, Library, Park, Mall, Bloor Street Shops
● Open-Dining, Quality Dining - No assigned seats or times, sit where you want! Meals homecooked, on-site, from scratch!
● Intimate Community - 100 Active Living Residents with Bloor Street Dining, 2 Assisted Living Floors each with on-floor dining, and per-floor balcony lounges and laundry.
● Fully Staffed - From 24 hour front-desk staffing and 24-hour care and nurse staffing to on-site physician, nurse practitioner, and long-term staff serving 10, 15 and 20 plus years.
● Concert Series - Outstanding music program in state-of-the-art 2-story auditorium with soloists, small ensembles, choirs and full orchestra groups.

Reviews of New Horizons Tower

What residents and their loved ones say about New Horizons Tower in reviews.

Grace Mandarano, family member

"My mom was loved and well cared for there. Thanks again to Robin and all the staff at NHT. You were HOME to my mom for the past two years. "

Paul Engels, family member

"Our mother moved in a couple of years ago... New Horizons has turned out to be an amazing place for our mom. She's on the 3rd floor for "memory residents" where she gets friendly and attentive care. The staff are absolutely amazing! They have our mother dressed nicely and always looking her best. They engage her in her favourite game (Scrabble) which she still wins regularly! New Horizons is super-clean, well-organized, and always cheerful. We're very lucky our mother is so happy there."

Bonnie Henry, resident

"We moved here from Sault Ste. Marie and we're glad we did. Everything is designed and built and planned for seniors, so that they have just a splendid time here. They have a wellness centre, and with my nursing background, that impressed me. It includes a doctor and a nurse practitioner, with nurses on staff. If you ever have an emergency, you can get help. There's also a closeness to many facilities required by older people. Without even using a bus, we've got banking, a tremendous library just..."
