Advice on finding the right care at the right time
Alzheimer's Disease is a progressive disease, and during each stage of its development you will need varying types of care. In Canada, there is specialized help for each stage in the progress of Alzheimer's. If you contact the Local Health Integration Network, they will give you options focused on public help available; you should avail yourself of as many of these public services as you can. Private services, though, are a worthwhile augmentation to public healthcare, and you need to be aware of many excellent Alzheimer's care services available in Richmond Hill and surrounding towns.
Stages of the disease and finding care that matches
At the outset of Alzheimer's Disease and in its early stages, family caregiving may suffice. Make sure you know all the help that is available to you, though. Respite care stays are an excellent resource, available from local seniors care facilities in Richmond Hill and area. This service is tailored to give caregivers a break; the Ontario government provides support for a variety of situations. For example, if your loved one requires help at home, you may qualify for complete coverage using home care services, including personal support for bathing, dressing and other activities of daily living.
Your loved one can also take short stays in Richmond Hill long term care homes (again, as long as they qualify). Short stays in York Region care homes are covered for 90 days per year. This is an excellent resource offered to Ontario families, to help you be the best caregiver you can possibly be. Learn more about government help available, from ontario.ca (see below).
As the disease progresses into its middle and later stages, there are a number of things to consider. Caregiving at home will become more difficult all the time. You will need to think ahead to long term care. There are some bureaucratic difficulties in dealing with this, however. You need to get a medical assessment, and once you have been assessed as requiring long term care, you will be assigned a care home. Not all care homes are the same, though, and many families refuse the Richmond Hill care home to which their loved one has been assigned.
There is help for families who are selective, though. Various memory care facilities in York Region (as listed above) will provide excellent care to your loved one. Many of these are associated with long term care facilities, too, although you will have to pay for memory care (as opposed to the way long term care is mostly subsidized).
The advantages of moving into memory care
These Richmond Hill Alzheimer's care homes excel at memory care. Some features:
- Design for patients with dementia, including secured hallways, colour coding and more
- Specialized therapies that help alleviate memory loss and encourage interaction with others to keep the brain active
- Highly trained care staff, well-versed in Alzheimer's care and specialized approaches like GPA and others
The disease progresses at a different pace in every case, as you may be aware. It is better to be over-prepared than under, of course. If you plan ahead and research all you can, you will be as well-prepared as you can be to deal with the practical issues related to the disease; this will make it just a little bit easier to deal with the personal aspects.
