Types of retirement villages available
Retirement villages are almost always separate from long-term care homes. However, they are likely not distinct from other related kinds of communities, which might include:
- 55-plus or active adult communities where healthy and self-sufficient residents live the early years of their retirement with new friends who share similar values and tastes
- Retirement condominiums where seniors can take advantage of home ownership without some of the inconveniences of living in a detached home
- Independent living homes in which residents enjoy the services, luxuries, and amenities of a retirement home while living an independent lifestyle
- Assisted living residences where seniors live semi-independently, but may receive assistance with some daily chores
Benefits of retirement villages
Today’s retirement villages are more luxurious than they have ever been. Because retirement villages have become increasingly efficient and competition amongst them continues to grow, they are also more affordable. The facilities and services that they provide you with make living relaxing and allows you to pursue passions or hobbies that you may have put off. In a retirement village, you might find some, if not all, of the following:
- Golf Facilities (i.e. golf courses, putting greens, driving ranges, indoor practice facilities
- Health and wellness centers (i.e. fitness equipment, spas, clubhouses, physiotherapy)
- On-site medical staff and facilities
- Other recreational activities (i.e. tennis, ping pong, cards rooms, boating, billiards, shuffleboard)
- Dining rooms (some retirement villages include meals in your fee)
- Party facilities for entertaining guests
Living in a retirement village also helps you avoid loneliness. Many medical studies have found that social interaction is a great way to keep your mind active and avoid Alzheimer's and other mental health problems. Surrounding yourself with others is almost guaranteed to make your life more enjoyable.
Retirement villages work to keep you safe. Staff who work around the clock and excellent security measures will be there to deal with any emergency that may arise. You and your family could have peace of mind in such an environment.
