Designated supportive levels in assisted living
Supportive living in Edmonton falls under the auspices of Alberta Health Services. It’s available to seniors who need help with basic tasks of daily living, a list which includes bathing, feeding, and dressing, and more. Supportive living in the province falls under two separate categories, Designated Supportive Levels 3 and 4.
Designated Supportive Living 3 (DSL3) offers the required care supports for those who require intermittent care. For example, care at this level may include help with some very basic daily tasks like bathing. It includes meals, housekeeping, linen and recreational services. Seniors who are still capable of moving independently are suited for DSL3, and communities listed above are suitable for seniors in this category.
Designated Supportive Living 4 (DSL4) offers a bit more support including specialized dementia care. Individuals with more complex medical needs that are predictable and safely manageable with the help of professional nursing (LPN level) require this level of care. DSL4 includes things like chronic disease management, full help with feeding (including tube feeds), as well as transferring.
This level of support may not be available at some homes listed above. Consult with each for more details.

The benefits of assisted living retirement homes
At the communities listed above, you will also be able to take in the finest hospitality services (including meals, housekeeping services, laundry services and the like) as well as 24-hour emergency response and related security. They also offer the advantage of allowing couples with varying care needs (perhaps one spouse being very independent) to remain together in one place.
Take a closer look at advantages:
- Social activities. Regular social activity is a core aspect of healthy living, and many people who move into one of the communities listed above will delight in all the new friends just outside the door, and find there’s something to do every day. Family members will notice an improved outlook on life.
- An updated environment. Communities, right down to the private suite that you rent, are created with your needs in mind. Many retirement homes are updated regularly, and these are designed for accessibility. Here, you can move into a suite that will be simpler and more modern than your family home, and will have everything you need at this point in your life.
- Extensive amenities! Communities above will offer a wide collection of amenities, for example, a pool or golfing, etc. Consult each profile linked to above to learn what they offer.
- Home maintenance is a thing of the past. No more housework, cleaning, dishes, snow shoveling – all those pesky tasks that get more difficult with age. You also have all your bills covered in one simple monthly payment. You won’t even need to go grocery shopping. Many communities are like an all-inclusive resort you never have to leave.
- Safety and security. People are on watch around the clock, doors are locked, and buildings are well-lit. If you need any help, it's just a call bell away.
