- How to find further help for palliation and senior care
Palliative care and hospice care in Ottawa takes on a number of different forms, but one option people often overlook is local retirement residences, located throughout the region, including places in Kanata and Orleans. Retirement homes are well-equipped to deal with medical and health care issues, including ready nursing staff on hand that may also include an onsite doctor. Importantly, Ottawa's care homes foster a homelike environment that is less clinical and sterile than some other healthcare environments.

When hospice care in a retirement home is the right choice
When you consult with health professionals, they will tell you about the variety of local hospice services. Be sure to take a serious look at local seniors' care facilities and their willingness to take in clients for short term (respite) stays and palliative care stays.
Special cases where seniors' homes are a superior choice include situations where hospice care is required for dementia patients. A number of Ottawa retirement homes focus on memory care. These homes have care staff professionally trained to deal with sufferers of Alzheimer's Disease and related dementias. Facilities may also be enhanced with design that helps Alzheimer's sufferers and care may include specialized therapies.
Specialized training of staff can include training in the Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA), a course that helps PSWs and other care workers fully understand dementia patients. GPA training works through scenarios, helping care workers anticipate situations that may arise, situations unique to caring for dementia sufferers.
As we have heard from one care home worker, hospice patients feel more at home in a retirement residence. "It's a much warmer environment… [Our palliative care clients] know that their life is coming to an end. They feel comfortable here. It's not a clinic, it's a home to them."
