What to know about this topic:
Families beginning the search for assisted living are well-advised to begin considering options the earlier the better. It's important to know when, for sure, you should be actively seeking assisted living senior care. In essence, you will need to start looking when your loved one is not taking care of personal matters. You can take up personal caregiving or hire personal home care, but in many cases there comes a time when you need to move forward into an environment that will provide the safety and care that you need (and so much more).

When to start searching for assisted living
Here are some things to look for and be concerned about:
- If there are obvious signs that your parents' care of their house is declining, this can be a sign that they will do better in an environment where someone else is doing most of the care for them. Some decline over time can be expected, but elderly parents should move before a lack of care leads to dangerous situations.
- If parent's personal hygiene deteriorates, this is another sign that you need to start thinking about assisted living. In a Hamilton retirement home, they can get care with dressing and bathing, two of the basic personal care services that come with the move into assisted living.
- If a parent's mobility deteriorates, you can buy a rollator or a scooter to help them retain independence but the move into an assisted living community will be the best solution. Here, they will find everything they need under one roof. The entire building will be designed for their safety and security with wide hallways, excellent lighting, and personal safety aids (such as handrails, etc.) built into their suite.
- If you find yourself inordinately worried about them being alone. When adult children worry about their mother or father being alone in their own home and become overly conscious of the dangers of a fall in the home, or anything else, you should investigate the possibility of the move into a seniors' retirement community.
Assisted living costs in Hamilton and area: a survey
Costs are one of the main concerns for families searching for senior care. Below, we provide a brief survey of fees charged by some area retirement homes listed here.
Location |
Starting cost/mo |
What's included |
Burlington West |
$4500 |
Basic dining, housekeeping, daily tidy. Support for many medical conditions including cancer and strokes. Several types of extended assistance (e.g. bathing and dressing) are included, but some (e.g. incontinence care) are not. |
Hamilton Mountain |
$4400 |
Basic dining, housekeeping, daily tidy. Support for many medical conditions including cancer and strokes. Several types of assistance (bathing and dressing) are included. |
Paris* |
$3300 |
Meals, daily tidy, feeding, bathing, dressing, transfer and other ADLs |
*36 kilometers outside of Hamilton proper, listed here for comparison purposes, to show you money-saving options not far outside of Hamilton.
The data above is for informational purposes. You will need to discuss fees with each of the communities to confirm the final monthly costs you will be paying.
And as you see above, expanding your search to places outside of Hamilton can help you find less expensive options. Typically, people want to restrict themselves to options closer to home, so if you live on Hamilton Mountain, you will restrict yourself to options there only. This can be limiting, as there can be wide variations in the quality of care, and you may find that there are assisted living facilities near Hamilton, in Niagara Falls, for example, or Dundas or Ancaster (or further west in Brantford and area) that is better suited to your needs or those of your loved one.
