Continuing care retirement communities in Kitchener-Waterloo, Guelph, Cambridge (and surrounding towns) offer various types of care under one roof, ranging from assistance with some daily tasks, to care for Alzheimer's or long-term care.

Advantages of continuing care communities

There are a number of key advantages to living in an environment that offers the full continuum of care in one location.

1. This allows couples to remain together. In many cases of older couples, spouses have different care needs. For example, where one spouse needs memory care but the other is still very healthy, a continuing care retirement home offers an ideal situation.
2. Anticipates changing care needs. For a senior who feels ready to move into a retirement community (perhaps because of a health scare), a move into a continuous care facility assures that they will never have to move again, should their health deteriorate further.

The definition of continuing care used here is selective; the phrase may be used differently depending on the context. (Learn more about definitions.) Complex continuing care is a program of care offered by the Grand River Hospital in Freeport and some other health care facilities in the area. This definition applies to cases of people with chronic illness and specific care needs. This depth of geriatric care may indeed be provided by some progressive-minded retirement communities, especially as governments and facilities address the changing needs of the elderly.
