The variety of options in assistance for seniors
In some cases, you can get all the help you need using home care services. This can help you financially, by delaying the need for a move into a retirement residence full time. Targeted care provided by home care agencies can help you with specific needs including feeding, dressing or bathing, if your elderly loved one only needs help with one of these personal care activities.
When you should consider a move to assisted living
The move into assisted living might be advisable in cases like the following:
- Inattention to personal care. When elderly people pay less attention to personal hygiene, this can be normal. But adult children should be aware of signs that this lack of personal care has taken a turn for the worst. This may be for any of a variety of reasons, but this may be because of reduced mobility or unreported pain they are experiencing. When elderly loved ones reduce their food intake and show signs that they need help with bathing and with other personal care, this can be a turning point in care needs.
- Lack of proper mobility. Chronic pain or old age can take its toll. If someone is no longer to properly navigate their household, and the addition of a rollator or scooter is no help, it may indeed be time for a move. Lack of proper reflexes can result in a fall, which can be very serious.
- Overextended personal care. If you find yourself giving more care to your parents and you have exhausted home care services as well, it may be time to make the move into assisted living senior care. Oftentimes, personal care is an attempt to make up for lack of a social outlet. The move into congregate living, when it is done right, can lead to many new friendships and a drastically renewed social life.
