Benefits of a retirement home with a continuum of care

A variety of living arrangements are supported by the health care system within the province of Alberta: continuing care at home, retirement communities with supportive living and more under one roof, and facility living in long term care homes. In home care in Alberta is available through publicly funded services, supported by Alberta Health Services (AHS). Long term care in the province provides care for people with complex health needs who are unable to live in any other setting; again, costs are supported heavily by AHS.

A continuing care retirement home that includes supportive living (as seen listed above) is an ideal situation for seniors in certain circumstances. Specifically, couples with different care needs can remain together in a community that offers a continuum of care. There are many cases where one spouse has advanced care needs while the other spouse is still very independent. The couple can stay together and see each other every day while the one who needs more advanced care gets that care as needed.

Another distinct advantage of continuing care homes, for Alberta seniors, is that this removes for once and for all the stress of future moves. For seniors who move into independent living or even light supportive living, the initial move can be a shock to the system, stressful and disruptive. If someone has lived in their traditional home for a long time, this can be very disconcerting. They can often feel like they never want to ever move again. Should they move into a continuing care home in Calgary, where all future needs are anticipated, they will have lasting peace of mind and should never need to move again.
