The first Berwick Retirement Community, Berwick House in Victoria, opened its doors in 1989, under the watchful leadership of Gordon and Chris Denford. The father and son are actively involved in both the business operation and day to day activities of all communities, to this day. Berwick's founders and their guiding principles

Berwick Retirement Communities’ senior management team is helmed by owners Gordon and Chris Denford, who have been working together for over 30 years to carry out their vision of always offering seniors “the best possible quality of life, in the nicest possible surroundings”.

Gordon has been building homes in Western Canada for over 60 years. In the mid 1980’s, he wanted to create a residence specifically designed for seniors, but exceeding the standards of the day. This included:

• a state-of-the-art communication systems in a purpose-built building
• a full range of exceptional amenities and services within a caring community setting 
• exceeding all expectations of a retirement residence, a “step up” for residents 

With the success of Berwick House in 1989, he continued to set the bar higher with five additional resort-style retirement communities, each individually unique and built specifically for their location.

Christopher works with Berwick’s architectural team in the design of each retirement community. He has over 30 years of residential development experience, extensive knowledge of seniors’ housing requirements and a keen eye for aesthetic details. This combination of skills enables him to assist in the design and development of award-winning independent living residences that, as he says, “he would be happy to live in himself”.
