Checklist for older travelers
Research thoroughly
Learn all you can online about the destination you are headed to. Check out several different travel websites and read reviews and recommendations from others on where to go, what to do and – of course – what to avoid and what to be concerned about.
Keep required documents up to date
Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months after your return date. There are countries that won’t allow entry if your passport is set to expire soon.
Apply for a visa if necessary.
Stay connected

Be sure that you have /mobile phone service wherever you’re going. Understand charges that will be applied from your current carrier. Find out about packages or discounts they offer that apply to your specific travel itinerary. Also: investigate local options if you are staying for any length of time. For example, cell phone service in Europe is much cheaper than it is in Canada.
Keep contact with people back home and make sure that you can always connect with people by email, social media, phone, text, or other communications. Many robust communication tools can be used through local wifi, of course. Make sure loved ones have another place to reach you in an emergency in case something happens to your /mobile device or other technology.
Although banks offer more robust fraud detection all the time, contact them anyway to let you know you are traveling and where you are going, just for your own peace of mind. Ask if they have international banking partners, where you can get easiest access to your money, following from your itinerary.
Preparing for medical challenges
Purchase health insurance and make sure you are covered for everything.
Consult with your physician before any travel and tell him or her where you are traveling and ask about any vaccinations you may require.
If you require any medications, be sure you know the generic names of each, so that these will be recognized by pharmacies. Be sure that your medications are not considered illegal in countries to which you may be traveling!
If you require mobility devices of any kind, be sure that you can use them where you are traveling and be sure that they are well serviced before you leave.
