Reviews of Carp Commons Retirement Village - Verve Senior Living

Gain exclusive insight into life at Carp Commons Retirement Village - Verve Senior Living. Comfort Life’s reviews give you exclusive insider information.

Our perspective

This is the kind of place where people will discover how great senior living can be. The staff and the building environment help create a community where people make friends, form bonds, and enjoy life in a group of senior peers. Those who have lived alone will find great friends here and learn to enjoy life anew. People’s lives improve immensely here.

Carp Commons allows people to retire in this lovely, heavily-rural area, west of the hustle and bustle of Ottawa proper. It’s also a growing area, of course, with this community being one of many newer developments. It's an ideal destination for people from throughout Eastern Ontario who want to be close to family in Kanata and Ottawa's west end.

This mid-rise delivers on Verve's philosophy of making every day great. Seniors who are still independent but no longer want to live alone will find their enthusiasm rekindled here. It’s perfect if you're tired of solo meals and want more friends. Independent seniors will find a home on the top floor's private residential units, where you can choose to come downstairs to participate in activities. You'll also be able to relax in the spa, have a meal in the dining room, or join in life in the games room. Seniors have told us the move is an "enjoyable adventure."

Last spring, I was faced with a tough choice: it was no longer safe for my dearest friend, because of an increasing cognitive impairment, to continue living in her home. I shopped around looking for the perfect place for her, a place where she could feel safe, be healthy, and be treated with dignity and respect. When a friend suggested Carp Commons, and I went for a tour, I knew that this heart-wrenching decision had just become a little less painful.
My friend has been happily and actively living at Carp Commons for 4 months. She is thriving! She is less anxious, her 'sundowners' are less severe, she has an in-house physician, and she's eating excellent food every day in an extremely clean and cozy atmosphere with lots of activities to choose from. The staff--every single one that I've interacted with!--is respectful, knowledgeable, and above all, kind. Rebekah Gunning nursed me through the first few weeks, and emailed and called me regularly (daily!) to give me updates on my friend.
Carp Commons was a perfect ray of hope at a time when my sadness, despair, and grief were at their highest.

My mother has been a resident of Carp Commons since 2019. Recently her husband passed away and she needed to change apartments. Moving is a complicated process for anyone, let alone a recently bereaved 97-year-old.

Fortunately for us, Rebekah made the moving process incredibly easy by helping us choose a lovely new apartment that fit my mother's needs and budget.

She was so helpful and compassionate during the entire process, it is an immense relief to me to know my mother will continue to be so well taken care of at Carp Commons.

My parents moved into the Carp Commons in October of 2023. It was a major transition for them however, both Rebekah and Pat were so welcoming and went above and beyond to make them feel welcome.
Both my mom and dad are very pleased with the care, maintenance, and attention to detail that all staff show towards the upkeep of Carp Commons.
The dining room is bright and beautifully decorated for each sitting. The dining staff makes a concerted effort to get to know the residents and their culinary preferences.
The admin and front desk staff are so welcoming and kind to both visitors and residents - greeting everyone with a smile. I am very pleased with the extra-curricular offerings for seniors such as Chair Yoga and low-impact fitness - my parents are really enjoying those specifically!
Carp Commons offers top notch care blending country charm location with urban amenities either onsite or nearby.

A retirement home is only as good as its director of care and staff and Colin Ferguson and his staff are amazing. He quickly and efficiently deals with any concerns (which are few). He is very accessible and very present at all times. My mom has settled very well considering there is a language barrier which we were very concerned about. She is well cared for in the dementia wing with only 11 residents living there so it is a very intimate, high ratio of care staff to residents. We are so lucky to have found such a good placement for our mom and have peace of mind knowing she is well looked after.

From day one my father-in-law has found a comfortable and welcoming home at Carp Commons. His accommodations are inviting and of high quality. He receives excellent personal and medical support and care. The programs and facilities are top-notch. Visitors are equally welcomed as members of the Carp Commons family. The staff members are all exceptionally friendly, and the general atmosphere is uplifting and peaceful. All of us, including our father the resident, could not be happier with our decision to make Carp Commons a part of our lives.

Carp Commons is an amazing place! My mother-in-law moved in December 2023 and she loves it. She loves that the staff are all so friendly and helpful. Her studio room is just the perfect size! She loves the food each day! I can't thank Rebekah, Jill, Collins, Charlotte, and the rest of the staff enough I was worried about this transition and everyone has stepped up and made it delightful. All the residents are amazing and so friendly and helpful as well.

Joanne Braaksma, resident

I am currently a resident at Carp Commons and am thoroughly enjoying the adventure. I came at a time when I thought I was okay and made my own decision. I learned that my health was not as good as I thought. Being here brought me to a state of soooo much better health, it even amazes me. The staff here are so pleasant and I find so patient with not only me but everyone. They make you feel like you are a 'somebody'. The food is excellent when the Chef can get what he orders from the distributor. Everyone knows your name--literally.
The one complaint that some people have is that there are too many activities to choose from! They must now make a decision. Everyone listens to your suggestions and are willing to help you get things set up.
Being a former Co-op teacher I had occasion to go to many Retirement Homes and saw the condition of many of them. Carp Commons is so far ahead of all of them. From the moment you walk in the front door people are smiling, residents are doing things. There is a hive of activity. I highly recommend Carp Commons to all my friends and anybody else who will listen.

Fantastic, caring staff. Unbelievably helpful and friendly. Everyone there is like family now!

Carp Commons, became home to my mother-in-law a number of years ago, when it was first opening. She was among one of the first residents there. During our time at The Commons, we always felt welcomed and supported. We had tried a number of other places over the years, but the small-town warmth was just what my MIL was looking for. We have no hesitation in recommending The Commons. They truly created a home for my MIL until her last days. Caring for her, and supporting us as well through the COVID period.

Dena (& Clayton) Purvis, family member

Our family can't say enough amazing things about our experience at the Carp Commons. They welcomed us with open arms during a terribly difficult transition out of the family home of 40 years and we have found a wonderful new home and community for our parents. We have such peace of mind knowing they care so well cared for.

Jennifer Mather, family member

My mother has been a resident at Carp Commons since December 5th, 2022 and is really enjoying her new life here. The people are so wonderful. Always something for everyone to do. The food is delicious. My mother likes to phone me after her meals to let me know how good they are. The building itself is beautiful and very well maintained. I have also referred another family to this residence and will continue to do so. Thank you [to] all the great staff at Carp Commons!

Ed Isaacs, family member

Really nice new accommodations for your aging loved one, they are well cared for and a very impressive staff who is always available to answer any questions that you have. Highly recommended!

Jane Greencorn, family member

Melanie is a true gem! She showed how much she cared from the beginning by being so accessible and willing to offer information and guidance. She and Collins made a difficult process simple and my parents and I appreciate them so much.

Morgan Jackson, family member

I've been blown away with the whole experience of getting my dad moved and settled at Carp Commons. Every single person I've spoken with has been friendly, helpful and kind. The marketing and sales team was so helpful through the entire experience to make it as smooth and supportive as possible. They made my dad feel comfortable with the process and set him up so nicely. It is reassuring to know he is at such a lovely home and community.

Sara Smith, family member

My Mother-in-law has been a resident of Carp Commons since May 29 of this year and it has been a great experience so far. The residence itself is beautiful, bright, and clean. The staff are great and always ensuring that Mom is included in activities and feels welcome. I would recommend this Carp Commons!!

Peg Rankin, family member

My father moved into Carp Commons in June, 2021. The staff is wonderful, very attentive and helpful with any issues or questions while my Dad is transitioning from living in his home alone to retirement residence living.

Linda Seccaspina, family member

I am in my personal life a town councillor and and advocate for seniors on the United Way East and Carebridge teams. In my many years being the caregiver for my mother in law, Ida Seccaspina, I knew one day she would have to be in a senior facility. When her dementia got worse it was time to find somewhere with a good memory care unit and Carp Commons is it. In the two years I have seen nothing but amazing care and a facility that rivals a 5 star hotel. Staff are very caring and I personally know what they are dealing with, so my hat is off to them. NO hesitation whatsoever recommending Carp Commons for your loved ones. None at all.

Arlene Boisvert, family member

My parents have been living there for almost a year. I am most impressed with how friendly the staff are. Within one or two days they remember the residents names and always address them as such and are extremely respectful . Even during this very trying year with the stress of covid the staff always are pleasant and cheerful.

The whole building is bright, clean and inviting. The cleaning staff take great pride in their work and it shows.

They have a wonderful chef who offers a wide range of meals. There are 2 main choices every meal and for the pickier diners you always have the option to choose off menu items.

The nursing staff are very knowledgable and do not hesitate to consult the in house doctor should the need arise.

The activity co ordinator has her hands full during the isolation of covid. She still manages to plan individual activities that can been done in the residents' own suite. When everything is clear there are a wide range of activities such as movie night, bingo , arts and crafts and local entertainment to name a few. There is no reason to be bored at this retirement home.

I would recommend it to anyone. I will be planning on moving there myself in the future.

We are very thankful that Mum found a home at Carp Commons. Her every need is taken care of, she has plenty of fun things to do and she has met many new friends. The facility is beautiful and her new home is a perfect size for her. Mealtimes offer gourmet options and fun social with friends. The staff are kind, generous and attentive to her needs providing genuine care. COVID -19 has been a challenge for all of us. We are thankful that Mum has been protected and holistically cared for - mind body and spirit. Thank you Carp staff - we are so grateful for all that you do.

Joan Hayward, family member

Mom has been very well looked after living at Carp Commons Retirement Village. She has lived there for 2 years and enjoys the excellent food, the activities and all of the friendly staff. She has felt very safe throughout this pandemic with all of the health guidelines being followed. I would highly recommend living here if being in a small town environment is right for you!

Karen Proud, family member

My mother has been staying at Carp Commons since they opened. The staff are fantastic and really care about the residents. The facilities are beautiful and very well maintained. We are so happy to have found such a great place for Mom knowing that she is will taken care of when we are not able to be there. Even through this pandemic the entire team at Carp Commons have bent over backwards to make sure the residents and their families feel comfortable and have what they need to make it through. Would highly recommend Carp Commons!

Lynn Dal Farra, family member

Carp Commons is an extension of home. I feel my Dad is cared for with love, kindness, friendliness and expertise. After years of worry with him living without help, Carp Commons provides independence, stimulation and fabulous meals! Every member of the staff are attentive, kind and flexible. Thank you for such TLC!

Peter Lininger, family member

I was very apprehensive about placing my Mom in an Assisted Living Facility and although I still regret that she can’t be on her own Carp Commons has done a lot for my peace of mind. It is a beautiful place and I can’t say enough about how friendly and helpful the staff have been. They always answer my questions and are very accommodating when I have a request. I can relax a bit more knowing that my Mom is in very capable and caring hands.

Bruce Berger, family member

Carp Commons is a wonderful place to call home for my Mom. People are friendly, service is excellent and the place is kept very clean. Selecting this place for home has been a blessing!

Debbie Trenholm, family member

My parents keep saying that moving to Carp Commons is one of the best decisions they have made. I can see that they are thriving in so many ways. The staff is uber-helpful to our family. The vibe in the place is energizing. A joyful place to visit and for my parents to live.

Rich Trenholm, family member

I cannot give high enough praise to the staff, the management, and the facility at Carp Commons. They have been simply incredible as my parents moved from their home into this beautiful facility. Despite all of the COVID restrictions, which they are following to a T and keeping everyone safe at Carp Commons, my parents have thoroughly enjoyed their time thus far at the Commons. If they like it this much now, I can't wait to see how much they like it after the restrictions are lifted!

Steve Wendt, family member

We are so pleased with my Mother-in-law's experience at Carp Commons. She says everyone is so friendly, she loves her rooms and view, and also enjoys the food. Even Heidi, her cat feels welcomed! Although in many ways my mother-in-law is still living independently we all have great peace of mind that help is just a call or button push away. Covid has been such an isolating experience with her living alone at home but now there are so many more people for her to interact with.

Alan Scobie, family member

Our family had to make the very difficult decision to move our wife and mother to a place where she could receive a high quality level of physical and cognitive care found only in a residential environment. having looked at a few facilities and frankly getting a little despondent, we were steered to Carp Commons as having first class care and a stimulating and caring environment. The minute we were in in touch with Rebekah and Melanie, and having a very good virtual tour we were excited that this could be the place for assisted living services. After a follow-up in-person, in-house tour and discussion, we were convinced!

The next difficult step was the move- in during the pandemic quarantine requirement, creating a lot of anxiety over the 14 day isolation period. We had full confidence in Rebekah, Melanie and Collins, the Health & Wellness Mgr. that they would provide the best available experience and environment to ease the transition - for all of us. They did that in spades! In fact, we couldn't believe how easily our wife and mother transitioned into her new home. She is totally comfortable with not only her very nice and modern physical surroundings and environment but just loves the staff. Happy and contented doesn't fully describe how she feels - she just loves the people and her surroundings: and of course, like so many others... the food!

I am continuously amazed at how upbeat and helpful the staff are at Carp Commons. I observe their interactions with the residents and other staffs and have rarely met a group of more upbeat, dedicated and genuinely nice and engaged people. They are always open to questions and feedback and very proactive in their care management. Our family is just so happy(and relieved) that we found them...

We're on a difficult journey as a family that is made so much more manageable and tolerable with the support of the wonderful caring people at Carp Commons.

Carp Commons is the third home for my parents in the Ottawa area and it is by far the best. The facility is new, the food is outstanding and the staff are excellent and caring. The Carp community is also very supportive and engaged. I highly recommend Carp Commons.

Stacey D., family member

My family would like to thank the staff at Carp Commons for their wonderful caring and support of our aunt; from the nurses and support staff on the second floor, the wait staff in the dining room, to the people who organize ways to entertain the residents. The Retirement Village has lovely rooms for activities and dining. Tasty meals are creative, varied and nutritious. There are many activities provided that are well attended by the residents. - music, painting, exercise classes and more. The seasonal special events like the Christmas with family members featured a live band and excellent hors d'oeuvres and lots of people taking photos of the fun. Special thank you to the management for being proactive in adopting safety measures throughout the COVID emergency. They ensured the safety of everyone from residents to staff.

Margaret Watt, resident

Since the pandemic started, we have been especially well looked after – well cared for, well fed, and well informed. The staff are a happy group and smile on the job! We are so fortunate to have such a lovely group of people to look after us. It’s they who have kept us healthy.

Janie, family member

My parents moved into Carp Commons during the Pandemic and therefore had to go into quarantine. The staff at Carp Commons went out of their way to make this as pleasant as possible. They continue to be a very friendly and helpful group of people and my parents are very happy and relieved to be there. They also love the food!

Beth, resident

I wish to thank all the wonderful staff at Carp Commons for their ingenuity, creativeness, thoughtfulness and caring. We, the residents, are so fortunate. .. We are glad to advise the public that some senior’s homes are capable of providing excellent care to the residents!
