This is a spectacularly modern take on senior living that literally towers over many other senior care choices in North York and the central GTA. Seniors find rejuvenation in a community of their peers where there is so much help ready. Care available here includes regular doctor visits, a local pharmacy, nurses on staff and a regularly visiting physiotherapist.
Residents and families highlight the many exceptional qualities of staff here. Some residents tell us openly about how helpful and pleasant the staff is, while we can see the appreciation felt by others. There are recreation ladies that keep residents busy with exercise programs, craft activities, and games including brain games. On top of that, you can see management, office staff, servers, nurses all going about their jobs happily here. The net effect is the creation of a healthy, happy community. Outside, there's a walker's paradise through the streets and parkland of North York. This is a vibrant neighbourhood that includes a Farmer's Market, the North York Library and many more things to do.The upshot of all this is that inside and out, it's a wonderful place to be.

My husband stayed at Canterbury Place for two weeks while I was away. It is a beautiful place with excellent food. The amenities provided something for everyone. The staff was friendly and extremely competent. The residents' interest and care was of paramount importance. We feel fortunate to have access to a home away from home when needed.
Magnificent place. Has a certain warmth like home. Very accommodating and polite staff with a great smile.
My husband was in short term respite. He was treated with respect, dignity and love. The staff love their work and their residents and it permeates throughout the gorgeous building. The enterainment director, Simone Rowe, has a real eye for decorating and the parties are absolutely special along with the entertainment. Always happy residents.
Since 2015, my mother & father had the pleasure of living at Canterbury Place Retirement Residence in Toronto. I cannot express enough how impressed I was with every aspect of their experience. My mother has since moved on to a Long Term Care facility and I can honestly say that we miss life at Canterbury.
First and foremost, the management team and staff at Canterbury Place are exceptional. They go above and beyond to ensure that every resident feels valued, respected, and cared for. Their dedication to providing personalized attention and support is truly commendable. Whether it was assisting with daily activities, organizing engaging social events, or simply offering a friendly smile and conversation, the staff consistently demonstrated their commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive community.
The facilities at Canterbury Place are top-notch. The residence is beautifully designed, with clean, spacious and comfortable living areas that exude a sense of tranquility and elegance. The suites are thoughtfully designed, providing a safe and spacious layout allowing ample room for walking devices. Floor to ceiling sliding doors and windows provide abundant natural light and dual access to a large balcony with incredible views of busy Yonge Street and the City. The common areas, such as the dining room, multiple lounges, cafes, games room, terraces and state of the art theatre are tastefully decorated and offer a perfect space for socializing and relaxation. Each floor has been recently updated with new corridor carpeting and is equipped with newly renovated laundry facilities.
One of the highlights of my parents stay was the exceptional “white glove” dining experience at Canterbury Place. The culinary team consistently delivered delicious and nutritious meals, catering to a variety of dietary preferences and restrictions. The menu featured a wide range of options, and the quality of the ingredients was evident in every bite. The dining staff were attentive and friendly, ensuring that every meal was a delightful experience. I regularly enjoyed joining my parents for lunch and/or dinner.
The range of activities and amenities available at Canterbury Place is truly impressive. From fitness classes and wellness programs to cultural outings and educational workshops, there is something for everyone. The robust programming schedule is thoughtful and full of variety. The Life Enrichment team really make an effort and are creative in bringing variety of interesting, engaging and fun activities to the residents. The sense of community fostered through these activities and amenities is invaluable, creating opportunities for socializing, making new friends, and pursuing personal interests.
Since COVID, the residence has implemented comprehensive protocols and measures to ensure the well-being of all residents. From regular health screenings to 24/7 emergency response systems, every precaution is taken to provide a secure and comfortable living environment. The nursing team are extremely knowledgeable, reliable and organized when it comes to the dynamics of medication management and caring for the acute and long term medical needs of the residents. The team of PSWs are so loving and patient. They form genuine relationships with the residents that compel them to go above and beyond their basic job requirements.
Overall, my parents (and my), experience at Canterbury Place Retirement Residence was nothing short of exceptional. The management team should be commended as the overall product offering has been materially elevated in recent years. All aspects of the facility and services is considered in my opinion to be extremely “high touch” but not stuffy. The combination of outstanding staff, beautiful facilities, delectable dining, engaging activities, and a strong sense of community truly sets this residence apart. I wholeheartedly recommend Canterbury Place to anyone seeking a retirement community that prioritizes dignity, comfort, care, and a vibrant lifestyle.
This is a great retirement community. It is diverse, warm and friendly. There are fun and interesting resident activities and good cuisine. Staff and management are friendly and supportive. The healthcare professionals and team are very attentive and responsive. It gives me peace of mind to know that my Father is so well taken care of.
Canterbury place is providing a good service and the residences are very friendly. Thank you all the staff for your help.
Unfortunately my Mom only enjoyed 6 months at Canterbury Place and then passed away. But I was grateful that for the last 6 months of her life she was able to relax and not worry about cooking and cleaning. She loved Canterbury Place and said it made her feel like when she was on a cruise ship (great dining, movie theatre and activities).
Canterbury Place is a lively community. Before my mom moved there, she did not think she would enjoy living in a retirement home. Her opinion of retirement homes changed drastically after moving to Canterbury Place. Canterbury Place is very conveniently located and it is a multi-cultural community where everyone is friendly and welcoming. My mom made many friends and enjoyed many activities there. Suffice to say, it wasn't an easy decision for her to move to a different retirement home after spending only one year in Canterbury Place. She is now closer to family.
I like to mention that both the management and the staff of Canterbury Place were very accommodating before, during and after my mom moved. They did everything possible to make the transition as smooth as possible. We are very grateful for their kindness.
I moved to Canterbury Place in mid February of this year. I chose Canterbury because the team makes sure residents are safe and Covid protocols are followed. Being at Canterbury makes me be around people and I wish I can socialize more. The staff and management team is very nice, kind, considerate and polite. They make me feel at home and I need to try my best to adapt.
Canterbury Place is a fantastic home! All the staff are outstanding! My parents are so happy with their move to Canterbury. My mother, Catherine, enjoys many activities such as bingo, movie night and cruise week. My father, Thomas, loves the food! The guest musical artists provide fun entertainment to the community.
Everyone from Marketing, Reception, Housekeeping, Nursing, Dining, Maintenance and management makes my parents feel welcome.
When Covid started over a year ago, Maureen asked me to write a note for the staff to acknowledge the sacrifices that everyone is making during this unprecedented time. It slipped my mind but after what I heard what was done for my mother today, I have to let you know that the staff, past and present, that work at the Canterbury Place are angels on earth. They make a world of difference to all the seniors living in this community. I know, as with the rest of my family, that my mother is the best place. I can remember that fateful day back in January 2017 when I met Maureen, Rachelle and Gary for the first time, and I knew it was going to be an amazing experience for my parents. This experience continues today.
A special thanks goes out to Mario. He is a rock, a saint, and very much appreciated for what he does to keep the building running smoothly. Actually, this sentiment goes out to all the staff. What you do is important, and it takes a special personality and commitment to put up with all those old folks:)
[They paid] kind attention to my mother’s 100th birthday. She enjoyed the attention that you brought to her and the cake (lemon of course!) was outstanding.
A special shout out to Andrea for her great help yesterday when my mum was feeling a little overwhelmed by the day. The kind of care she offered was truly appreciated.
Our dad was at Canterbury Place for 5 years. He was quite independent when he first arrived, but needed a fair amount of help in the later stage of his stay. The staff were always so cheerful and helpful to him, for which we are most appreciative. They are constantly investing in the facility and programs to make it a better experience for the residents. To the staff - thank you so much for all you did to make dad's experience a wonderful one! We appreciate everyone from the front desk to the caregivers and nurses, to the the dining room staff to the maintenance people. You all are wonderful.
The team at Canterbury Place has been amazing! In the process of moving our mom from the US, during Covid, and carrying out all the logistics remotely, Maureen Gold, and her staff have been exceptional! We are finally able to rest, knowing that mom, is in good, caring, loving hands. Thank you Maureen and the entire Canterbury team for making this happen!!
This a great retirement community. It is in a great location, has engaging resident activities and great cuisine. ... I am very grateful for the ongoing care and attention that my Father receives.
My mother has lived at Canterbury Place for almost 3 years and she's very happy with her suite and the services offered to residents.
Great location - close to everything on Yonge St. and nearby parks for quieter walks.
Very good food choices and residents get surveyed for their input on future meal choices.
While the pandemic has been extremely difficult for everyone, management takes strict precautions to ensure & enforce safety.
The facility was recently renovated and updated, and it's beautiful.
My father-in-law has been living at Canterbury Place for several years now. He’s very happy to be there and it has proven to be a great choice.
The location is great – right near the subway, a Metro supermarket, and a wonderful public library (though Canterbury Place itself has an extensive library of its own). The employees are accommodating and warm. A variety of social and exercise programs are available. We were very impressed that management sent out regular email updates to family informing us about things related to Covid procedures and infection controls. I [recommend] Canterbury Place ... to my cousin, who subsequently moved in.
Canterbury Place has done an excellent job during this pandemic and especially on vaccinations! They lobbied and procured doses for all residents and for designated essential caregivers. I can't thank them enough for pushing to get the vaccines, especially for essential caregivers so we can interact directly and safely with our family members. Both of my parents are at Canterbury Place and I am so thankful that as of today! (Feb 11) both my parents and myself have received both doses of the vaccine. Everyone did an excellent job coordinating this massive effort and can't express my heartfelt thanks in ensuring a safe and happy environment for our family.
My dad has been here for a few months and we are so happy with the facilities and staff. He is much happier here than his previous retirement home. Would recommend.
My grandmother has been living at Canterbury Place Retirement Residence for about 5 years now. Since DAY 1, the staff, the cleanliness, the support and the love, have been second to none. At 93 she still has her independence and enjoys all the extracurriculars this wonderful place has to offer.
Excellent - so happy we found it. My parents moved here from Peterborough to be close to family. ... There was no drama in convincing my parents to move to their new "home" once they settled in (a real relief with 80+ year olds!) very happy. Safe and friendly in times like these - I am so appreciative and being their only child caregiver outside of Canterbury, so pleased.
My 97 year old mother has lived at Canterbury Place for many years. She has always been happy with the staff and programs. COVID came along and life changed and many adjustments had to be made to protect the residents. During the many necessary changes, restrictions and adjustments that had to be made, my mother always said she felt safe there and that everyone was always trying to do their best at all times.
The decision to move our Dad to Canterbury Place was a great one, especially during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. Canterbury Place has done a remarkable job at keeping its residents and staff safe. Moreover, Canterbury Place successfully secured 1st and 2nd doses of the Moderna vaccine for residents, staff and essential caregivers in the midst of vaccine supply challenges. While our dad hasn't been able to partake in all the of the activities and [amenities] Canterbury Place has to offer, or interact with other residents as [he] would like because of the pandemic, we can rest assured that he is in an exceptionally safe place with access to medical care, exercise, caring staff, and high quality food without having to leave the facility. I would also like to call out Sales and Marketing Manager, Maureen Gold, for her personal attention and responsiveness to our dad's needs when he initially joined the Canterbury Place community.
My father has lived at Canterbury Place for 3 years now, and he is very happy with the accommodation and staff.
The location is excellent, being right on Yonge Street, a block north of the North York subway station. There is a supermarket within walking distance, and some residents utilize that to help them stay active. There are restaurants everywhere, if one wants more variety.
The entertainment provided is top notch, and the food has been been good to excellent whenever I joined him for meals.
Covid-19 has been a huge challenge both for staff and residents. Management has taken very stringent precautions with Covid-19, and continues to do the utmost to keep the residents safe. Residents have been much more isolated than in normal times, to prevent the spread of any incursion of the virus.
Thank goodness all staff and almost all residents (all who wanted to) have now been vaccinated (not all have received the second dose yet but that's scheduled to happen soon too). Hopefully the activities will be expanded as safety permits in the near future!
My mother moved to Canterbury Place only two months before COVID-19. We were so impressed with the residence from day one from the wonderful activities to the dining, and the level of care provided. The lock down came and the efforts to keep everyone safe through such challenges was absolutely wonderful. This has been a trying time for everyone but even more so for our seniors. Canterbury has managed so well through this, ensuring residents are engaged and not feeling isolated. We can’t say enough about how much we appreciate everything the staff has done and continues to do. It gives us such peace of mind. Thank you!
Canterbury Place has been home to my brother for over almost 3 years and I want to compliment the staff on the level of service and their attention to detail that they have provided to him. During this difficult COVID time, they have taken exceptional steps in protecting the residents, providing continuous information to the families by email and have always been available to speak with by phone. I would not hesitate to recommend Canterbury Place to anyone seeking a seniors' residence.
My mother lived at Canterbury Place for 2 years (prior to passing) at 97. She loved the place, the location, the friendly community and the staff....who are simply excellent at all levels and very accommodating.
She took part in many activities (daily exercise class, bridge club, movie nights and the afternoon coffee club). Once she moved in, her spirits lifted and she felt 20 years younger! My only regret is that we didn't move in several years earlier.
Many children of elderly parents are worried about sending their parents into a retirement facility......but the socialization aspect simply rejuvenates many people....my mother was among them. Highly Recommend Canterbury for the golden years.
Our family has really appreciated all the kindness and support shown to our dad, and to our family, over the years he’s been living there. We are particularly grateful for the exceptional effort and care during these unique Covid circumstances. Thank you!
My father has been at Canterbury retirement home for over a year. We have found the entire staff to be extremely caring and responsive during this time, and throughout the Covid-19 crisis, they went above-and-beyond in their communication and care.
The care we received was really quite exceptional
You all win a feather for your caps!
Great Peace of Mind
Yes, I did make the right move!
The last five or six weeks have once again reinforced my feelings that my mother chose very wisely when she picked Canterbury Place. I honestly cannot say enough about the Canterbury Place staff. The care, kindness and patience that they all possess and demonstrate daily is heartwarming to experience. Every single staff member that I have come in contact with, whether they be in maintenance, housekeeping, resident medical and personal care, dining, marketing, reception, or accounting, is a credit to their organization. Canterbury Place must be very proud of the team they have. Their efforts mean so much to my wife and I, and especially to my mother. (January 2016)
My husband had a massive stroke so we moved from our house to a condo near Yonge & Sheppard. He kept falling and I had to call 911 quite often to pick him up. Whenever I went grocery shopping to Metro on Church Street, I saw Canterbury Place Retirement Residence under construction. After it was finally completed, my friend invited me to visit her relative at Canterbury Place and I really liked what I saw. After bringing my family, we moved here in November of 2014. This was the best move I made for my husband and me. I feel like I'm a queen – no more shopping for groceries, no more cooking, no more dishes, no more housekeeping. We get plenty of delicious food served by the friendly dining room staff. One morning at breakfast, there were no more bananas. Our friendly Chef walked in to the breakfast bistro and asked me if everything was okay. I told him there were no more bananas and he said just wait a minute. A little while later he came back with two grocery bags full of bananas from Metro – I just cannot forget his thoughtfulness of getting me the bananas… I really appreciated that. My husband needed a lot of help from the caring nursing staff – in the morning to wake him, bathe him, dress him and get him ready for the day, and in the evening to get him ready for bed. I am so happy living here in the friendly community with so much help from all the staff and residents; they go out of their way to accommodate me with my requests whenever I need their help. There are so many interesting trips and activities, exercise classes, movies, drawing, knitting, bingo, music, craft sales, etc. This is my home. I am living with all of my new friends and I am very happy every day!
My mother moved here a few years ago and she calls it home. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Mom is very happy there and has made many friends.
Passionate staff. [You can see they care deeply] about providing the best possible senior living experience.
I made an excellent choice in coming
here. Everyone, and I mean everyone here, is so helpful! ... you will be
impressed.
