You worry about your parents the way they used to worry about you. But instead of forgetting curfew you fret over your mom's increasing forgetfulness to take her medication or even refill her prescriptions. It's now your turn to sit up waiting for your dad to return with the car. As weeks lengthen into months and the only thing getting easier is how quickly you become concerned, it may be time to think about moving your mom or dad into a retirement community.(Watch: Anne Hopcott didn't wait for her children to make the decision to move into a home.)
Anne Hopcott chose not to wait for the decision to be made for her. "There are so many people who come in here and say 'My children made me,' which I don't like to hear," says Hopcott. "There's no use waiting until you fall, or you get something wrong with you and say I should have done that," says the nonagenarian (90-year old) who passes her time playing cards and staying social.
Besides having a ready made group for bridge or hearts, most retirement communities promote healthy living and organize activities to keep their residences' busy. One of the ultimate benefits, however, is the added support that comes from living in a community. You may even find that the change in momentum gives you a much needed spark in your life.
