Delmanor Northtown: First retirement residence to receive the LEED award
Every building has an environmental impact and that's why Delmanor Northtown is very proud that they are the first LEED® certified retirement residence.By diligently pursuing LEED certification, Northtown made the conscious decision to lower adverse environmental community impact and, at the same time, raise the standard of comfort of its residents.
Canadians spend an average of 90% of their time indoors. Clearly, the quality of materials and finishes inside a building are crucial; yet many finishing products release Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
Indoor pollution sources such as upholsteries, carpets, adhesives, cleaning products, printers and photocopiers, combustion appliances and furnaces, plastics, building materials (such as urea formaldehyde and creosote infused wood products), inks, paints, and finishes release gases and particles into the air that are often toxic (VOCs).
Indoor air quality can be greatly improved by choosing non-polluting material and cleaning solutions while providing appropriate ventilation systems. At Delmanor Northtown improved indoor air quality comes from installing superior systems and materials and the continued use of environmentally supportive cleaning solutions.
The results are apparent to visitors and residents alike:
• Carpets, paints and adhesives contain fewer volatile organic compounds
• Improved ventilation delivers fresh air to every suite while exhausting stale air from washrooms
• MERV 13 filters installed on central building air delivery systems provide superior filtration and air quality
• Air tight construction minimizes transfer of contaminants between suites.
LEED® is the most established and comprehensive green rating system in the marketplace. LEED® is an acronym for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and is administered by the Canada Green Building Council. Its strict criteria is second to none, and Northtown has been certified in all six categories outlined by the LEED® Program:
- Sustainable sites
- Water efficiency
- Energy & atmosphere
- Materials & resources
- Indoor environmental quality
- Innovation and design process
