3 Reasons To Stay Active In Your Retirement
Staying active in some capacity throughout your retirement years is a very common trend for adults who are 55 or older. With so many opportunities to stay active physically and or mentally, there really is a sport, event or activity that can be enjoyed by the vast majority of people. And there are great benefits for individuals seeking to remain active within their community and through different organizations.Studies have shown that the three major reasons that people 55 or older choose to stay active are:
- Social Interaction: An opportunity to meet new people with similar interests and perhaps travel to different cities.
- Relaxation: To participate in competitions which are usually designed for a person who enjoys an average level of activity.
- Health benefits: There are a large variety of activities that cater to many different tastes and levels of fitness from exercising your brain with card games to participating in walking or cycling.
The important concept that must be emphasized is the fact that staying active includes staying mentally active. For example, even individuals who are mobility impaired can partake in activities that have social interaction because interacting with others stimulates the mind. Group activities also allow people to compete in a relaxed atmosphere and help them feel younger and stay healthy.
There are so many great and affordable activities to try in communities across Ontario. And once you get involved you probably won't want to stop; it's just too much fun!
Organizations including the Ontario Senior Games Association and their member districts take great pride in having opportunities that are available to everyone. From playing cards with friends to participating in a softball tournament, there is an activity to excite us all!
